Should You Merge Your 2.4GHz and 5GHz Networks Back Into One?

A few weeks after splitting their bands, some people go looking for how to undo it. Managing two network names, remembering which devices go where, and re-entering passwords when you add a new gadget gets tiring. This is the honest answer on whether merging back is a step backward or just a reasonable trade for convenience.
| Two networks (split) | One network (merged / Smart Connect) | |
| Control | You choose exactly which band each device uses | Router decides automatically |
| Convenience | Extra step when adding new devices | One name, one password, done |
| Best for | Households with specific performance needs (gaming, work calls, many devices) | Households that mainly want it to "just work" |
| Risk | None, beyond the setup effort | Router may put a device on the weaker band without you noticing |
Smart Connect (the merged mode) uses your router's own logic to steer each device to whichever band it estimates is best, based on signal strength and current load. On recent, well-supported routers this logic has genuinely improved and works reasonably well. It's not a downgrade in the way it might have been a few years ago — it's a different set of trade-offs.
If the two-network setup annoys you but you still want some control, most routers let you save both networks on your devices once, and after that it's no different day-to-day — your phone remembers both and connects to whichever is in range. The extra step only really happens once, when a device first joins.
Smart Connect is covered in the "Switching Between Bands" section of our main dual-band guide. If you haven't split your networks yet and want to know how, see "How to Split Your Dual-Band Router Into Two Separate Wifi Networks." If smart home devices are part of your decision, see "Why Your Smart Home Devices Only Connect to 2.4GHz."
