How to Split Your Dual-Band Router Into Two Separate Wifi Networks

If you bought a dual-band router and still only see one wifi name on your phone, that's normal, not a fault. Most dual-band routers ship with band steering turned on, which combines both bands under a single network name and quietly decides which device goes where. That's convenient, but it removes your ability to control it, and it's often why heavier devices don't get the 5GHz speed you paid for.
Splitting is worth doing if you have 8 or more connected devices, if certain devices (gaming console, laptop, smart TV) need consistent 5GHz, or if your smart home devices keep dropping off a crowded 2.4GHz band. If you only have a handful of devices and nothing feels slow, band steering left as-is is genuinely fine — there's no requirement to split just because you can.
Don't give both bands the exact same name. Some people do this expecting devices to auto-switch between them — in practice it just recreates band steering manually, and you lose the control you were trying to gain. Two different names is what lets you deliberately choose which band a device connects to.
Once split, move your heavier devices — gaming console, streaming box, work laptop — onto the 5GHz name. Leave smart home devices and older gadgets on the 2.4GHz name.
If you've split the bands and 5GHz still isn't showing up on a specific device, see "Dual-Band Router Set Up. But 5GHz Isn't Showing Up? Here's the Fix." Once your network is split, it's also worth locking down security settings — see "WPA3 vs WPA2 and Channel Settings."
