Partners Group, a global private markets firm, has agreed to acquire about 75 per cent stake in Atria Convergence Technologies (ACT), one of India's largest providers of high-speed fiber-optic broadband, from Argan (Mauritius) Ltd and TA Associates. Partners Group, which has been a joint investor in ACT since 2016, will acquire a controlling stake in a transaction that values the company at an enterprise value of nearly $1.2 billion, a statement from the Partners Group said. The deal size is learnt to be around $900 million.

Launched under the Digital Telangana initiative, the government announced that Hyderabad is host to these WiFi hotspots as part of the Hy-Fi project done in collaboration with ACT Fibernet. These hotspots are located in malls, hospitals, public parks, metro stations, public libraries and educational institutions among others. ACT plans to add 500-1,000 more such hotspots.

ACT Fibernet, one of the largest ISPs after telcos, has opened a network of over 3,000 Wi-Fi hotspots across Hyderabad, making it one of the the largest free public Wi-Fi networks in the country. After registering with their phone numbers at ACT Free Hy-Fi network, the users can get free access to the internet for 45 minutes at 25 mbps speed with a data limit of 1 GB. For the subscribers of the fixed broadband service, the Wi-Fi access is free across the city, including at the 47 metro railway stations.

As part of the Hy-Fi project, the State government in collaboration with ACT Fibernet has launched more than 3,000 public wi-fi hotspots in the city for further accelerating 'Digital Telangana'. Addressing an event here on Wednesday to commemorate the over 3,000 public wi-fi hotspots, IT Minister K.T. Rama Rao said Hyderabad is now home to India’s largest free wi-fi network. “You have done a fabulous job,” he said, appreciating the company that implemented the project pro bono. He said efforts should now be aimed at leveraging the infrastructure to help people through this pandemic, by way of launching e-health and telemedicine initiatives.
